Sinus surgery (FESS)
The sinuses are made up of many small and large air filled spaces which surround the nasal cavity. The inside of the sinuses are covered with mucous membrane and are aired through small openings to the nose. When the openings are blocked and mucus collects in one or several of the spaces infection can occur. Generally this is in conjunction with the flu/cold, whereby the mucous membrane is irritated and the production of mucus increases. This is treated with medication for the swelling (nose drops and spray) and by rinsing out excess mucus. Potent and long-term sinus issues must be treated with antibiotics.
Prior to sinus surgery
Those who feel they have a cold or are ill before their sinus surgery must contact Art Clinic as soon as possible. It is important that one is infection free on the day of surgery. It is an advantage to use steroid-nose spray (Fluide, Rhinocort, Becotide, Lokilan, Nasonex) during a longer period before surgery and for sometime after surgery. One should not use anticoagulant medication two (2) weeks prior to the day of surgery.
Surgical Procedure – Sinus surgery
The surgery is performed endoscopically, i.e. the surgeon uses an endoscope through the nose and into the sinus, leaving no visible scarring. All surgery on sinuses can be performed this way. The purpose is to drain/empty the sinus of mucus and possibly clean and expand the natural openings. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia and is painless. The lowest age allowed to undergo sinus surgery at Art Clinic is 14 years.
The procedure takes between 1-1.5 hours, one will rest in the recovery ward for the first hours following surgery.
After your sinus surgery
You should organise for someone to collect and accompany you home after surgery, you are not allowed to drive yourself home neither should you be alone the first night after surgery.
It is often necessary to take sick leave for approx. 1-2 weeks after surgery. It is important that you try to breathe with your mouth closed as much as possible so that your nose stays open. In certain cases tamponades are placed in the nose and are to remain for a few days after surgery.
After surgery you will be given painkillers or a prescription. These are to be used when necessary. Treatment with steroid-nose spray can be resumed one to two weeks after surgery, you will continue with it until the surgeon says otherwise.
